Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Can I still sleep train if my baby is breastfeeding?

A: Absolutely! It doesn't matter if you choose to breastfeed, formula feed, bottle feed, etc. We can always find a way for your baby to sleep independently, and with an appropriate schedule for his or her age.

Q: Do you follow one specific sleep training method?

A: No, every single sleep plan is completely customized to your family, and your child. Sleep methods are recommended based on your parental views, family needs, as well as your child’s age, disposition, behaviors, etc.

Q: My baby falls asleep just fine at night, but struggles with overnight wakings and/or his naps are few and far between. Is this just his personality? Or will you have a solution for us?

A: I will most definitely be able to help you! So many people think that sleep habits are genetic and you just “get what they get” when it comes to the type of sleeper your baby is. This is not true! Just like almost everything else in a baby’s life, healthy sleep habits are a learned behavior. If your baby is putting him or herself to sleep at night, you’re already ahead of the game. With just a few changes, it shouldn’t take long at all to teach your baby how to do the same thing when he or she wakes between cycles.

Q: Will your methods fix my child’s sleep issues forever?

A: I wish it was that easy! Unfortunately, there is no “one time, fix all” method. Over the next few months or years, there are several elements that can have a negative effect on even the best “sleep trained” child. I.e. new milestones, regressions, teething, an illness, vacations, or even just naturally becoming more lax over time and forgetting to implement some behaviors. Once your child is sleep trained however, bouncing back from these bumps in the road will be much easier. If you feel like you need a refresher consult, that can easily be pro-rated to accommodate your needs.

Q: Do you endorse the “Cry It Out” Method?

A: Absolutely not. During the cry it out method, or “CIO”, babies are left in their room, and completely ignored for countless hours on end. This is certainly not recommended, especially during such a critical period of growth. Unfortunately (with older babies mostly), crying is often part of the game. I cannot promise that we’ll be able to do this without any tears at all because that would be unrealistic since crying is how babies communicate protest, but together we’ll develop the proper plan for you and your baby while always keeping him safe, and with his or her best interest in mind. At no point will I ever suggest leaving him or her alone to cry for hours.

Q: My daughter is 2 years old and still doesn’t put herself to sleep and is up all through the night. I’m at the end of my rope. Is it too late to teach her?

A: Definitely not! Even if your child has developed some poor habits over time, it’s never too late to enforce healthier ones. Healthier for you, as a parent, is also a necessity. If her previous night time routine didn’t have a negative effect on you before, but it does now (or has gotten worse) now is the time to make corrections. We may have to be a bit more rigid with our approach, given her age, but getting her to sleep independently is absolutely something that can be accomplished.

Q: I’m on maternity leave and will be going back to work next week. I just realized I can’t handle being up through the night, when I need to be awake and focused at work all day. Can we start sleep training now?

A: Unfortunately, this is not something I would advise. I would strongly recommend waiting atleast 2 weeks before/after a major transition to sleep train your child. You going back to work will be a huge adjustment for your baby and you don’t want to overload him or her. You are more than welcome to contact me now and we can get a sleep plan together as well as set a start date for your baby to begin shortly after this new transition. I can also offer minor suggestions to help over the course of the next few weeks while you transition back to work before we begin.

Q: I have a few more questions.

A: Please feel free to contact me with any and all questions you have, that’s what I’m here for.
